WEAR FROM HOLDING
To protect the lacquer of the horn, it is very helpful to install a leather hand guard on the tail part where you hold the instrument with your left hand. Sratches and wet hands causes damages to the surface.
CASE OR GIG BAG ?
Very often Gig-bags are called as the repair men best friends. Yes, it can be true with most bags, but there are some makes that provide much better protection, if you walk often with the horn on the back, the gig bag is probably the best choice as these bags are considerable lighter and comfortable to carry. If you travel a lot with public transport systems and air lines, a modern hard case is the better option. The case offers better protection when something is pressed against it (like a heavy suit case or another person). Some modern horn cases are smart designed (f.e. Marcus Bonna cases), they are light weighed (not as light as gig bags) and offer enough storage room with compact outside demensions.
WHICH ALLOY IS LESS SENSITIVE ?
Nickel silver is the hardest alloy, yellow brass and gold brass are softer. Even though, a nickel silver instrument can still be dented as the thickness of most instruments is thin, especially the bell parts are sensitive. Store the horn right! More about the alloys, see Options.
The bars of Flipper and adjustable finger hook have soon lost parts of their coating
This parts were coated with clear lacquer. When installed the very tight drilling of the ball mounting plate took off the lacquer and each shift produces again a loss. If the position of both parts is not to be changed any longer, we can repolished and seal the area with new lacquer.
Can the surface of the horn be renewed if it has suffered after years of use? So that it looks as new again?
Naturally the horn can be revised completely if the lacquer is weared. We use a special baking enamel, which is burned after painting in a furnace for 1,5 hours with 120 degrees Celsius, it is actually quite durable. Certain climatic conditions like particularly humid and warm climate however can be a big challenge for every surface sealing. The places where lacquer is damaged will oxidize and discolour, this of course does not affect the playing behavior of the instrument.
Some small brown spots appear around the edges of my horns bell
Sometimes when fat remains in the soldered connections, it can expand with heat and flow under the lacquer, which causes brown marks. This happens for example at the soldered edge of the bell or under the supports. These blemishes can be removed easely, we can scratch this places and renew the laquer sealing.
